Description
This control box is a microprocessor-based automatic burner controller for ignition, flame monitoring, and safe shutdown of atmospheric gas burners. It operates on 220–240 V and has a pre-purge time of 10 s and a safety time of 10 s. Flame detection uses ionisation, with a minimum required ionisation current of 1.2 µA and a flame-loss reaction time of less than 1 second. The unit performs a false-flame check and automatic self-check at each start, and features an electric lockout reset. It is housed in impact-resistant, self-extinguishing plastic with IP40 protection, and complies with EN 298:2003.
Choosing and fitting
For a replacement of this type, first verify the supply voltage, safety time, and pre-purge time on the old unit’s label, because these parameters vary between versions. The flame detector must be of the same type (ionisation), and the control box must be compatible with the burner’s make; typical brands are listed for each model. Installation is possible in any position, often on a DIN rail or with screws, and wiring must follow the wiring diagram. After installation, confirm that the control box performs its self-check and false-flame check correctly.
Signs of failure
Typical failure modes include ignition faults or loss of flame signal, which cause the control box to lock out and stop the burner, often shown by a red LED. In many cases, the cause is a dirty, insulated, or misaligned ionisation electrode, so checking the electrode, its insulation, and its gap is the first step. On units with electric lockout reset, after clearing the fault, a brief power interruption resets the control box and allows a restart. The flame-loss response is fast, typically under 1 second, so a burner that keeps cutting out usually indicates an external issue rather than a slow detector.
