Description

This flame detector is used to detect and signal the presence of flame in forced-draught oil burners. It monitors flame via an ionization electrode or photocell and is suitable for intermittent operation on two or more burner devices. It operates from a 110 V supply with a voltage tolerance of -15% to +10%. Its heat-resistant plastic housing provides IP40 protection, and it can be mounted in any position at ambient temperatures from -20 to 60 °C. The device features a cascade amplifier, five cable entry holes, a false-flame check, and a green flame-presence indicator.

Choosing and fitting

Flame detectors of this type are selected by their detection principle: ionization-electrode or photocell versions must match the original, as a UV or IR detector would require a different control module. The electrical interface (wire count and voltage level) and the physical mounting (thread size, viewing angle, and envelope) must also be compatible with the burner control. Before fitting, compare the response time and sensitivity with the burner's requirements; a component that is too fast or too slow can cause nuisance lockouts or unsafe operation. Always check the burner manufacturer's datasheet for the correct detector type and install the replacement with the same orientation and wiring.

Signs of failure

Failures of this type typically show as no flame signal at the control, which goes into lockout when the safety time passes. A detector that outputs a flame signal when no flame exists can hold the fuel valve open—a dangerous malfunction. Check the sensing element for dirt, oil, or corrosion and confirm that the detector's signal changes with the actual flame.
