Description

Honeywell UVZ780 is a flame sensor of the UV cell type for gas and oil burners, operating on the ultraviolet radiation sensing principle. It has article numbers 18813 and 852.211.002 and is designed for direct line-of-sight mounting where the flame is luminous. When combustion occurs, the sensor detects UV radiation and sends a signal to the burner control; loss of signal triggers a safety lockout.

Choosing and fitting

UV-cell flame sensors are selected by detection principle, spectral range, response time, cable length and connector, and mounting sleeve. When replacing such a sensor, match the original in cable length and connector type, and confirm the mounting sleeve fits the burner's sight port. Position the cell for a direct line of sight to the flame, not to hot refractory or reflected radiation. The burner control must be UV-compatible; no adjustments to the control settings are needed for the sensor itself.

Signs of failure

Typical failures of UV-cell sensors include a contaminated viewing window, an aged cell producing a weakened signal, or a broken sheath. When the sensor fails, the burner control receives no valid UV signal and goes into lockout, shutting down the burner. Check the viewing window for dirt or soot, and verify the sensor's response with the burner control in test mode.
