Description
This heating element is a direct-immersion electric resistance heater with two independent circuits, each rated at 2.4 kW at 230 V, for a total output of 4.8 kW. It has two heating stages of 2.4 kW each. The element body is made of copper, incoloy or stainless steel, and it transfers heat by conduction and natural convection. A built-in overheat limiter (safety thermostat) cuts power if the water temperature exceeds a safe limit. It is designed to be immersed directly in the water.
Further details
| Control capability | Staged heating (half power when demand is low) |
|---|---|
| Design Features | two independent circuits allowing staged heating |
| Thread size | 1½ inch or 2 inch BSP |
Choosing and fitting
When selecting a replacement of this type, match the supply voltage and the total power output to the boiler or vessel rating. The immersion length and thread size (typically 1½ or 2 inch BSP) must fit the boss, and the element material should be compatible with the system water chemistry. Before installation, disconnect the power supply, inspect the sealing gasket, and replace it if damaged. After fitting, verify the element is fully submerged before power is applied, and ensure the flange is properly grounded. The two independent circuits allow staged heating if the controller supports it.
Signs of failure
Failure of this type of immersion element is often caused by scale deposits on the surface, which reduce heat transfer and lead to local overheating and premature burnout. Running the element dry will destroy it almost instantly. A faulty element may cause the boiler to underheat, trip the overheat limiter, or show no heating despite the controller calling for heat. Check the element resistance and inspect for scale or signs of overheating.
