Description
This Anstoss ignition transformer is used in oil and gas burners to generate the high-voltage spark that lights the fuel-air mixture. It steps up the mains supply voltage to a level sufficient to produce a spark across the ignition electrode gap. The transformer is energised only during the ignition phase, under command from the burner control, and is de-energised once the flame is proved.
Choosing and fitting
When selecting a replacement ignition transformer of this type, match the secondary voltage and current, primary voltage (230 V is common, but 110 V and 24 V versions exist), duty cycle, mounting arrangement, and terminal/cable connector pattern. Ignition cables must be silicone-insulated to withstand the high voltage and heat near the burner. Verify the terminal layout and connector pattern of the replacement part against the existing wiring before installation.
Signs of failure
When an ignition transformer of this type is suspect, first inspect the high-voltage cables. A hardened or cracked cable can leak the spark to earth, preventing ignition; this is often mistaken for a failed transformer. Check that the cables are silicone-insulated and in good condition before replacing the transformer.
