Description
The Cofi TRE820PS2 is an induction-type ignition transformer designed for gas and diesel burners, as well as equipment using light or heavy liquid fuel. It operates on a 230 V, 50 Hz supply and provides a single 8 kV output at 0.9 A. The transformer is energized only during the ignition phase, producing a high-voltage spark to ignite the fuel. It features a robust housing and silicone-insulated ignition cable. This model is compatible with GIERSCH RG30-Z-L-N burners and serves as an OEM equivalent to part number 47-30-20927. It is manufactured in Italy.
Choosing and fitting
When selecting a replacement ignition transformer of this type, verify that the primary voltage (e.g., 230 V) and frequency match the burner's supply. The secondary voltage and current output must be compatible with the ignition electrode gap and burner requirements. Check the mounting pattern, terminal type (spade, screw, or plug-in), and cable connector arrangement to ensure physical fit. The high-voltage cable must be silicone-insulated to withstand heat and potential. Also, confirm the duty cycle—transformers of this kind are designed for intermittent operation during ignition only.
Signs of failure
Common failures include open or shorted windings, which prevent spark generation, leading to ignition failure or burner lockout. A cracked or hardened ignition cable can leak voltage to ground, causing weak or no spark. The electrode insulator may also fail, resulting in arcing to the burner body. If the transformer is continuously energized due to a control fault, it can overheat and burn out. Check the cable and electrode condition before condemning the transformer.
