Description
This ignition transformer steps up the mains voltage to generate a spark across the ignition electrode gap. It is designed for gas and diesel burners with a direct spark ignition system. It operates from a 230 V supply and has a compact housing. The ignition cable is silicone-insulated. It is energised only during the ignition phase under command from the burner control, then de-energised once the flame is established.

Choosing and fitting
Ignition transformers of this class are selected by secondary voltage and current, primary voltage (commonly 230 V, with 110 V and 24 V versions also available), duty cycle, and physical mounting and terminal configuration. The high-voltage output cable must be silicone-insulated to withstand heat and high voltage. Before ordering, compare the mounting pattern and terminal layout with the existing part. The transformer is energised only during the ignition phase, so the duty cycle must match the burner control sequence.
Signs of failure
Ignition transformers of this kind can fail due to hardened or cracked insulation on the high-voltage output cable, which leaks the spark to ground and mimics a faulty transformer. A failing transformer may result in no spark at the ignition electrode, causing the burner to fail to start. Other failure modes include internal short circuits or open windings. When diagnosing a no-spark condition, inspect the ignition cable and electrode gap before replacing the transformer.
