Description
The Cofi TRS1020/16 is a two-terminal ignition transformer designed for impulse ignition of gas and liquid fuel burners. It converts a 230 V supply voltage into two high-voltage outputs of 5 kV each, with a secondary current of 20 mA. The transformer operates with a duty cycle of 25%, suitable for intermittent use during the ignition phase only. It features plug connectors for ignition cables with a diameter of 4 mm, and includes a power cable of 380 mm length. The unit draws 1.1 A and has an ingress protection rating of IP00, intended for installation in protected environments. Made in Italy, it is compatible with standard burner systems.
Choosing and fitting
When selecting an ignition transformer of this type, ensure the primary supply voltage matches the burner control output (commonly 230 V, but 110 V and 24 V variants exist). The secondary voltage and current requirements of the electrode assembly must be compatible. Physical compatibility includes the mounting arrangement, terminal type, and the connector pattern for the high-voltage cable. The high-voltage cable must be silicone-insulated to withstand heat and voltage; check its condition during replacement.
Signs of failure
Typical failures of ignition transformers include internal short circuits or open windings, leading to no spark or weak spark at the electrode. The burner may fail to ignite or experience intermittent ignition. Check the high-voltage cable for hardening or cracking, as this can cause spark leakage to earth and mimic a faulty transformer. Also verify the duty cycle is not exceeded, as overheating can damage the unit.
