This compact ignition transformer steps up the 230 V, 50 Hz mains supply to a secondary voltage of 8 kV at 20 mA, producing a peak voltage of 11.5 kV. It is designed to create a high-voltage arc between ignition electrodes to ignite the combustible mixture. The transformer has a duty cycle of 20% within 3 minutes and draws a primary current of 0.9 A. The standard power cable length is 520 mm, and the ignition cable connector is a plug connector with a diameter of 4 mm.

Ignition transformers of this type are selected by primary voltage (230 V is most common, but 110 V and 24 V versions exist), secondary voltage and current, duty cycle, mounting pattern, terminal type, and cable connector. When replacing one, match the electrical ratings and the mechanical fit—mounting holes, terminal layout, and cable connector—to the existing installation.

A common failure mode is a hardened or cracked high-voltage ignition cable that leaks the spark to earth, imitating a faulty transformer. When the equipment shows no spark, inspect the cable for damage before condemning the transformer.
