Description
This ignition transformer steps up a 120 V ac supply at 50–60 Hz to a secondary voltage of 5 kV for spark ignition. It provides an output current of 11–15 mA (depending on frequency) and is rated for 100% duty cycle in continuous operation. Housed in a cast aluminum enclosure with IP65 ingress protection, it is suited for direct installation in demanding environments. The single-pole output is grounded. It is intended for gas and liquid fuel burners and operates during the ignition phase only, as controlled by the burner control box.

Choosing and fitting
When selecting a replacement ignition transformer, match the primary voltage to the burner control output, and ensure the secondary voltage and current are sufficient for the electrode gap. Also compare duty cycle, mounting arrangement, and terminal/connector pattern to the existing unit. The high-voltage cable must be silicone-insulated; inspect it for hardening or cracks before installation.
Signs of failure
Common failure modes include cracked or hardened high-voltage cable insulation causing spark leakage to ground, which can mimic a faulty transformer. Overheating from exceeding the duty cycle can also damage the unit. Symptoms on the equipment include no ignition spark or intermittent sparking, and the burner control may lock out after failing to establish flame within the safety time. Check the cable and connections first.
