Description
This ignition transformer is a step-up transformer used for gas and liquid fuel burners. It operates on a supply voltage of 120 V AC at 50–60 Hz and provides a secondary voltage of 5 kV with a secondary current of 11–15 mA. The unit is rated for 100% duty cycle and is designed to be energized only during the ignition phase. Its aluminum housing is rated IP65 (NEMA 4), and the construction is single-pole and grounded. The transformer is manufactured in Germany and certified to CE, UL, and CSA standards.
Choosing and fitting
Replacement ignition transformers of this type are selected by secondary voltage and current, primary supply voltage, duty cycle, and the mechanical interface—terminal type and cable connector pattern. The supply voltage must match the burner control circuit; common versions include 230 V, 110 V, and 24 V. The transformer is energized only during the ignition phase, controlled by the burner control. Before ordering, compare the dimensions, mounting holes, and high-voltage cable connection with the existing unit. Ignition cables are silicone-insulated to withstand high voltage and heat; inspect them as part of the installation.
Signs of failure
A cracked or brittle ignition cable can leak the spark to earth and mimic a transformer fault, causing the burner to fail to ignite or spark weakly. Check the ignition cable and the electrode insulator before replacing the transformer.
