Description

This UV cell from Siemens, SKU 450211310, belongs to the sensor components category. It is used for flame supervision in oil-fired or industrial gas burners where an ionisation electrode is not suitable. The cell detects the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the flame and sends a signal to the burner control through a shielded cable to confirm that ignition has occurred and that the flame remains present during operation. It fits a Landis & Gyr AGR450211310.

Choosing and fitting

UV cells of this kind are selected by comparing the required sensitivity (minimum UV intensity to produce a flame signal) and spectral range with the burner type and fuel. The electrical supply voltage, normally a pulsed DC from the control, and the connector type must also be compatible with the existing burner control. Some cells have an integral amplifier; others are passive. A UV cell is usually mounted in a holder that sights through a port or the blast tube into the combustion chamber; before ordering, check that the lens is clean, the gasket seals properly, and that the manufacturer's part number cross-reference matches the control. Observe wiring orientation because some circuits are polarity-sensitive.

Signs of failure

When a UV cell of this type loses its flame signal—for instance because the lens is fouled by soot or an oil film, or the gasket leaks flue gas—the burner control will not confirm the flame and initiates a lockout within the safety time. A cell that views hot refractory or only a pilot flame instead of the main flame zone may deliver a false signal or fail to respond to flame loss. In polarity-sensitive circuits, reversed wiring causes immediate lockout. Usually these failures are detected by checking the lens, gasket, mounting position and wiring orientation before replacing an otherwise functional cell.
