Description

This electrode is a combined ignition and ionization unit for Giersch RG-series gas burners. It provides ignition spark and ionization flame monitoring in one body. The electrode measures 126 mm overall, with a 1.8 mm rod diameter and a 36 mm high-temperature ceramic insulator. Its body is made of special alloys and corrosion-resistant ceramic, with heat-resistant contacts. It includes a connector and requires no soldering; installation is plug-and-play. The electrode fits Giersch RG1, RG3, RG20, RG30, and RG20N burners.

Choosing and fitting

For this kind of combined electrode, selection and installation are based on physical criteria. When replacing, compare the overall length, rod bend, insulator diameter, electrode gap, and mounting flange configuration with the existing part. The insulator length and mounting hole pattern must also match. The electrode is positioned directly in the flame zone, so correct alignment and gap are critical. Some designs use solder connections, while others use push-on terminals; always verify the connection type required by the burner.

Signs of failure

Over time, electrodes in the flame zone suffer erosion of the metal tip from sparking and heat. Thermal shock or mechanical stress can crack the ceramic insulator. Soot accumulation can short the spark or block the ionization signal, causing misfires or flame detection loss. A drifting electrode gap lengthens ignition time or prevents flame sensing. Symptoms include the burner failing to ignite, intermittent flame shutdowns, or the control box locking out after a failed ignition attempt. Regular inspection and cleaning of the electrode and its surroundings help prevent such failures.
